Betsy DeVos is an innovator, leader and known for her philanthropic work focused on educational reforms, arts and bringing change in the society. As a newly appointed Education Secretary, DeVos has planned to overhaul the education system in order to introduce a universal voucher system. Moreover, she has also devised that public school funding is used for establishing the school that promotes teaching subjects and topics related to Islam. This way, these schools would not be controlled and manipulated by the state law and fundamental knowledge about Islam would be provided. This way ‘one shoe fits all’ policy of the public education system can be shred and the requirements of every student according to their background can be met.
Talking about Betsy’s other professional achievement, it is important to mention that she is an accomplished executive leader in the business field. She is the chairman of the Windquest Group, which is a private management and investment firm that strives to provide its customers with the best services and products. The main focal point of her successful company has always been around providing diverse projects in technology, manufacturing, non-profit and clean technology solutions. Despite having the responsibility of not only building, but also managing such a prestigious dynasty, Betsy DeVos never seemed to be fazed by the challenges she faced, and marched on, breaking every barrier that came in her way, and bringing about a substantial change using her brilliant vision.
However, Betsy is not only known for her political role in the American politics or her entrepreneurial contribution but also for her community service in the field of education. Her philanthropic work is worth praising as she is the chairman of the American Federation for Children and many other local and national boards who work in education and art reforms. Together with her husband, Dick DeVos, she has made large donations to many schools and inaugurated few institutions of their won. Through the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, they have donated $11.6 million to education, a sector they have always focused on. Moreover, many schools have reaped the benefits of their charity including a large number of Michigan schools namely, West Michigan Aviation Academy, and Dick DeVos’ alma mater Northwood University in Midland. They have also made a $22 million donation to launch the DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland in order to assist the development of art organizations. Betsy DeVos and her husband have also served on the board of John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts and ArtPrize.
