Andy Wirth has faced numerous business challenges in his business career. At Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation, he climbed the ladder of success for twenty years. And after becoming CEO of Squaw Valley in 2010, he embarked on a huge $70 million upgrade.
Andy Wirth handled these challenges with aplomb. His career brought him into contact with world-class athletes on Olympic teams, and numerous other luminaries. In his spare time, he took up exciting hobbies, including skydiving.
In skydiving, however, Wirth had found a hobby that almost conquered him. A dive in October of 2013 ripped his right arm from his body, and nearly cost him his life. His right arm was successfully reattached. After a harrowing number of procedures, he has regained most of the function in his right hand. Wirth has not let the experience slow him down.
After such a profound trauma, it would be difficult not to turn over a new leaf. In fact, it was more than that. The experience lit a whole new fire in Andy Wirth’s belly.
Following his accident, Andy Wirth developed a new level of empathy for wounded veterans. Knowing that many of them had experienced similar traumas helped him to identify with them. However, he also knew that as young people with far less lucrative careers, many of them were in need of assistance.
Because of this, Wirth began raising funds for the Navy SEAL Foundation. This organization provides assistance to the families of SEALs who were killed. Other charities, often with a focus on community, are also close to his heart. Wirth serves with the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, the Lake Tahoe Winter Olympics Committee, and is a former volunteer firefighter.
With determination, intelligence, and empathy, Andy Wirth has carved a path to the top of the business world. He is remarkable in his resilience. Where others may have given into self pity after such a huge setback, Wirth was inspired to support others with a similar affliction.
